    Recent La Plata basin drought conditions observed by satellite gravimetry

    The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) provides quantitative measures of terrestrial water storage (TWS) change. GRACE data show a significant decrease in TWS in the lower (southern) La Plata river basin of South America over the period 2002-2009, consistent with recognized drought conditions in the region. GRACE data reveal a detailed picture of temporal and spatial evolution of this severe drought event, which suggests that the drought began in lower La Plata in around austral spring 2008 and then spread to the entire La Plata basin and peaked in austral fall 2009. During the peak, GRACE data show an average TWS deficit of ~12 cm (equivalent water layer thickness) below the 7 year mean, in a broad region in lower La Plata. GRACE measurements are consistent with accumulated precipitation data from satellite remote sensing and with vegetation index changes derived from Terra satellite observations. The Global Land Data Assimilation System model captures the drought event but underestimates its intensity. Limited available groundwater-level data in southern La Plata show significant groundwater depletion, which is likely associated with the drought in this region. GRAC-observed TWS change and precipitation anomalies in the studied region appear to closely correlate with the ENSO climate index, with dry and wet seasons corresponding to La Ni\~na and El Ni\~no events, respectively

    A multiple catheter technique for studies or hepatic metabolism and blood flow in dogs with portacaval transposition

    A technique is described for in vivo hepatic metabolic studies, employing a multiple catheterization technique in dogs with chronic portacaval transposition. The animals are studied in the unanesthetized state immediately after the insertion of catheters through peripheral cut-downs. The gradient of metabolites entering and leaving the liver can be measured concomitantly with hepatic plasma flow. Additional simultaneous gradients can be obtained across the splanchnic capillary bed, or the hindquarters. Drugs can be introduced into the circulation by a systemic route or by primary injection into the hepatic circulation. The advantages of this approach compared to other methods of evaluating moment to moment hepatic function are discussed. © 1962

    Understanding Student Computational Thinking with Computational Modeling

    Recently, the National Research Council's framework for next generation science standards highlighted "computational thinking" as one of its "fundamental practices". 9th Grade students taking a physics course that employed the Modeling Instruction curriculum were taught to construct computational models of physical systems. Student computational thinking was assessed using a proctored programming assignment, written essay, and a series of think-aloud interviews, where the students produced and discussed a computational model of a baseball in motion via a high-level programming environment (VPython). Roughly a third of the students in the study were successful in completing the programming assignment. Student success on this assessment was tied to how students synthesized their knowledge of physics and computation. On the essay and interview assessments, students displayed unique views of the relationship between force and motion; those who spoke of this relationship in causal (rather than observational) terms tended to have more success in the programming exercise.Comment: preprint to submit to PERC proceedings 201

    Accelerating Cathode Material Discovery through Ab Initio Random Structure Searching

    The choice of cathode material in Li-ion batteries underpins their overall performance. Discovering new cathode materials is a slow process, and all major commercial cathode materials are still based on those identified in the 1990s. Discovery of materials using high-throughput calculations has attracted great research interest; however, reliance on databases of existing materials begs the question of whether these approaches are applicable for finding truly novel materials. In this work, we demonstrate that ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS), a first-principles structure prediction method that does not rely on any pre-existing data, can locate low energy structures of complex cathode materials efficiently based only on chemical composition. We use AIRSS to explore three Fe-containing polyanion compounds as low-cost cathodes. Using known quaternary LiFePO4 and quinary LiFeSO4F cathodes as examples, we easily reproduce the known polymorphs, in addition to predicting other, hitherto unknown, low energy polymorphs and even finding a new polymorph of LiFeSO4F that is more stable than the known ones. We then explore the phase space for Fe-containing fluoroxalates, predicting a range of redox-active phases that are yet to be experimentally synthesized, demonstrating the suitability of AIRSS as a tool for accelerating the discovery of novel cathode materials

    Calibration and evaluation of a semi-distributed watershed model of Sub-Saharan Africa using GRACE data

    International audienceIrrigation development is rapidly expanding inmostly rainfed Sub-Saharan Africa. This expansion underscoresthe need for a more comprehensive understandingof water resources beyond surface water. Gravity Recoveryand Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites provide valuableinformation on spatio-temporal variability in water storage.The objective of this study was to calibrate and evaluatea semi-distributed regional-scale hydrologic model basedon the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) code forbasins in Sub-Saharan Africa using seven-year (July 2002–April 2009) 10-day GRACE data and multi-site river dischargedata. The analysis was conducted in a multi-criteriaframework. In spite of the uncertainty arising from the tradeoffin optimising model parameters with respect to two noncommensurablecriteria defined for two fluxes, SWAT wasfound to perform well in simulating total water storage variabilityin most areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, which havesemi-arid and sub-humid climates, and that among variouswater storages represented in SWAT, water storage variationsin soil, vadose zone and groundwater are dominant. Thestudy also showed that the simulated total water storage variationstend to have less agreement with GRACE data in aridand equatorial humid regions, and model-based partitioningof total water storage variations into different water storagecompartments may be highly uncertain. Thus, future workwill be needed for model enhancement in these areas with inferiormodel fit and for uncertainty reduction in componentwiseestimation of water storage variations
